Miami basketball ranked No. 13 in AP Top 25 Preseason Poll

The Miami Hurricanes basketball team is ranked No. 13 in the AP Top 25 Preseason Poll ahead of the 2023-24 season.

It is only the fourth time in school history the Hurricanes have been ranked in the preseason poll and it equals the highest they have ever been ranked in the preseason poll as they were also No. 13 to begin the 2017-18 season.

Miami, which received 750 votes, is coming off a year where they made their first Final Four appearance and tied the school-record with the most victories at 29-8. They also won their second ACC regular-season title.

However, they will have to replace their top two-leading scorers from last season in ACC Player of the Year Isaiah Wong and All-ACC Second Team pick Jordan Miller, who were selected in the NBA Draft.

Miami does return starters Isaiah Wong, Norchad Omier and Wooga Poplar and has brought in Florida State’s leading scorer a year ago in Matthew Cleveland.

The Hurricanes are one of three ACC teams in the Top 25, joining No. 2 Duke and No. 19 North Carolina. The Hurricanes will face No. 16 Kentucky in the non-conference schedule as well as Colorado, which just missed the Top 25 at No. 27.

The 2017-18 team climbed to No. 6 with a 9-0 start and finished No. 22 in the final poll heading into the NCAA Tournament, where they were upset by Loyola-Chicago in the first round as a 6-seed. The other two teams who were ranked in the preseason poll were the 2008-09 team who was No. 17 and the 1999-2000 team who was No. 25.

Preseason basketball publication also have the Hurricanes in their top 25. Lindy’s has Miami No. 9, The Almanac has Miami No. 14 and the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook has Miami No. 22.

Miami hosts TCNJ on Oct. 29 for an exhibition game before starting the regular season on Nov. 6 against NJIT.
