No. 3 Men’s Tennis collects nine wins on day one of Miami Invite


Coral Gables, Fla. – No. 3 Texas Men’s Tennis collected nine total wins on day one of the Miami Spring Invite on Friday. The Longhorns took six out of their eight singles contests, and three out of four in doubles against players from No. 9 Georgia and No. 11 UCF.

True freshman Pierre-Yves Bailly made his UT debut and won both his singles and doubles matches, including a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory over No. 16 Trey Hilderbrand of UCF, and a 6-3 doubles win with sophomore Siem Woldeab over Trent Bryde and Britton Johnston of Georgia. No. 105 Woldeab also won his singles match with a pair of tiebreakers over Tristan McCormick of Georgia, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4).

Also in singles, both senior Richard Ciamarra and junior Chih Chi Huang rallied for wins after dropping their opening sets. Ciamarra defeated Lleyton Cronje of UCF, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Huang downed Erik Grevelius of Georgia, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Evin McDonald also won in three sets over Miguel Perez Peña of Georgia, using a rally in the third set to claim a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5) decision. Meanwhile, junior Nevin Arimilli had been the first off the court in singles for Texas with the only straight-sets match of the day, taking a 7-5, 6-2 win over Bogdan Pavel of UCF. 

In the two losses, sophomore No. 20 Micah Braswell fell in three sets to No. 62 Bryde of Georgia, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, and sophomore No. 73 Cleeve Harper went the distance and came up just short against Alan Rubio of UCF, 6-7 (7), 7-5, 7-6 (5).

For the Longhorns other doubles wins, the No. 13 pair of Ciamarra and Harper downed Grevelius and Blake Croyder of Georgia, 6-3, while Braswell and Huang defeated Cronje and Cooper White of UCF in a tiebreaks, 7-6 (3). In the lone defeat, McDonald and sophomore Eshan Talluri dropped their match to Perez Peña and Mathis Debru of Georgia, 6-3.

Texas returns to the court on Saturday with match-ups to be determined later Friday.
