Fallen Miami Police Officer Has Street Named After Him

MIAMI, FL — A Miami police officer killed in the line of duty almost six years ago has a street now named after him.

Officer Jorge Sanchez died on Nov. 1, 2016 when his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Southwest 8th Street and 137th Avenue.

He was 52-years-old.

On Thursday, Miami city officials co-designated Northwest 9th Street from Northwest 40th Avenue to Northwest 42nd Avenue as “Officer Jorge Sanchez Street” in his memory.

His three children attended the unveiling of the road sign named in their father’s honor.

The driver who fatally struck Sanchez, Ronald Pla, ultimately pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter, according to the Miami Herald.

According to WSVN-TV, Pla, who had a medical disorder, suffered a seizure right before the crash. He’d reportedly had been advised by his doctor to not drive unless he was at least six months seizure-free. He did not, prosecutors argued at the time.
