DORAL PLANT OUTREACH: As results of the county commission race unfold, the new Miami-Dade waste-to-energy incinerator plant, currently set to rise in the City of Doral, may be revised in the future and further community outreach is expected. The Office of Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, who decided not to veto the commission’s decision to select Doral for the new facility, said she will look for community feedback this fall. “We will definitely be doing community engagement on waste management, with a focus on how we reduce overall waste,” said her chief of staff, Rachel Johnson. “We expect engagement will happen this fall.” Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, candidate for the District 12 county commission seat, said he would seek to revisit the decision if he wins. Miami Today tried to contact candidate Sophia Lacayo numerous times but there was no answer.

FIU PRESIDENT HUNT: The Florida International University Presidential Search Committee met several times in June and July in closed sessions, which are exempt from Florida’s public meeting law, to continue working with R. William Funk & Associates to conduct interviews in search of the university’s next president. The next closed committee meeting is due today (8/25). “The search committee has met numerous times with the search firm to conduct interviews, recruit, and vet applicants,” said Roger Tovar, chair of the FIU Presidential Search Committee and vice chair of the FIU Board of Trustees, in his Aug. 5 newsletter through the university’s website. “We will provide an update as soon as we move into the next phase of this process.”

FLIGHTS TO NICARAGUA: American Airlines announced this week that it will resume its flights from Miami International Airport to Augusto C. Sandino International Airport in Nicaragua. The route was closed due to the pandemic. With its opening, the airline will be resuming up to 200 daily flights to 54 destinations in Latin America, a press note details. In Latin America, American Airlines operates flights to Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname and Uruguay.

GAS DROP CONTINUES: Average gas prices in Miami fell 12.7 cents per gallon in the past week to $3.58, according to GasBuddy. Prices in Miami are 64.7 cents lower than a month ago, though 57.9 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price fell 5.1 cents per gallon in the week to $3.86 and has fallen for 10 consecutive weeks, is down 51.3 cents from a month ago.
