MDCPS, Achieve Miami’s TAP formalize their partnership

Miami-Dade County Public Schools and education nonprofit Achieve Miami’s Teacher Accelerator Program (TAP) put pen to paper and formalized their partnership through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing to tackle the county’s critical teacher shortage.

Last year, 50 TAP program graduates were placed in schools, and this year 105 students already are participating in the program. The MOU signifies the district’s commitment to placing TAP teachers into schools, aiding in the teacher shortage that is affecting students nationally.

“Today is a much more expanded reason to celebrate. What I’m most excited about right now is the celebration of the intersection of the public and private sector, gathering our greatest universities right here in Miami,” said Leslie Miller Saiontz, founder and president of Achieve Miami.

Representatives from the three colleges teaching TAP’s curriculum were in attendance, as well as Miami-Dade Public Schools superintendent Jose Dotres.

Dotres, who expressed personal resonance with the initiative, said, “This program provides an opportunity for you to prepare before you enter the classroom. I would have probably entered in this program because I was a career changer.”

With TAP’s recent expansion from the University of Miami to Florida International University and Miami-Dade College, both non-education majors on track to graduate and career changers have the opportunity to partake in the program.
