Fort Lauderdale barricaded man in custody following shots fired at police


MIAMI – Fort Lauderdale police arrested a 31-year-old man accused of hurting a family member and then opening fire on officers.

Authorities said they responded to a domestic disturbance call between family members at around 2:30 p.m. near SW 28th Way and Riverland Road.

“As officers were arriving on scene, a man barricaded himself inside the residence with a firearm. The man fired multiple shots towards arriving officers while barricaded alone inside,” police said.

Casey Liening, Fort Lauderdale Police spokesperson, said that at least one police officer returned fire.   

A woman who was injured in the original disturbance was transported by a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

Authorities said the SWAT team attempted to make contact with the barricaded man. 

At about 7:50 p.m., the man surrendered to police, Liening said. “He will be charged. These charges are pending.”

He was identified as 31-year-old Joseph Criscione. 

During the standoff, nearby schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution. 

New River Middle School students had to wait for their parents to pick them up. 

Images from Chopper 4 showed a strong police presence with at least a dozen marked and unmarked police units. 

Police shut down Riverland Road during the standoff.

Residents in the area of SW 28th Way and Riverland Road were asked to stay indoors while police worked to resolve this situation.

Liening said the incident would be under investigation.
