Player’s Inter Miami deal ‘torn up’ after Messi comments

Inter Miami have parted ways with a player who was recently critical of their move to sign Lionel Messi.

Inter Miami have terminated the contract of a player who recently questioned Lionel Messi’s move to the club.

The Argentine superstar is already living up to the hype in the United States, having scored seven goals in just four games, including two sensational free-kicks, one on his debut as well one against FC Dallas earlier this week.

The club’s owners, manager Gerardo Martino, and a number of his new teammates have lauded his impact on the team already, but those sentiments may not have been shared by everyone around the club, with a few notable naysayers in that camp.

Among them were Rodolfo Pizzaro and goalkeeper Nick Marsman, with the former having since been offloaded by the Florida outfit by mutual agreement to make space for Messi as a Designated Player and joining AEK Athens in the Greek top flight.

Marsman, meanwhile, has become the latest to be given the chop at the club, with some believing that his recent comments about the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is the reason behind his abrupt exit.

The 32-year-old told ESPN Netherlands in June: “I personally think that this club is not ready for Messi’s arrival.

“We have a temporary stadium, people can just walk on the pitch, there are no gates.

“We also leave for the stadium without security.

“I think they aren’t ready.”

The Dutch goalkeeper has left the club, with an official statement from the Fort Lauderdale-based side confirming: “Inter Miami CF announced today that it has exercised its Salary Budget Charge buyout on goalkeeper Nick Marsman’s Major League Soccer (MLS) contract.”

Major League Soccer allows each team in the division to tear up one contract during a season by paying it out, with the David Beckham-co-owned team making use of the rule in this particular instance.

It is further claimed that they did so in a bid to open up space on their payroll, although some believe his comments about their readiness for Messi’s arrival did not help his cause.

Marsman, who joined the Miami outfit in 2021 from Feyenoord, is now a free agent after being bought out of his deal.
