POSTGAME NOTES: Revolution II defeat Inter Miami, 2-0

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – New England Revolution II (9-5-4; 35 pts.) defeated Inter Miami FC (4-11-2; 14 pts.), 2-0, on Sunday night at DRV PNK Stadium. Revolution Homegrown midfielder/defender Peyton Miller tallied his first professional goal for the game-winner as forward Malcolm Fry notched his third of the year to secure all three points on the road. New England sweeps its two-game season series against Inter Miami having previously between Federico Higuain’s side on May 28, 1-0.

The match remained scoreless through 51 minutes until forward Jordan Adebayo-Smith’s high press caused a defensive error for Miami and Miller netted home the pass from the East London native to put Revolution II ahead. At 15 years and 243 days old, Miller became the youngest player to score his first professional goal for New England’s second team. The Unionville, Conn native earned first start since returning from Frisco, Texas where he won the U-19 MLS NEXT Cup with the Revolution Academy.

“It feels amazing. It all started with the press from me, Jordan [Adebayo-Smith] and Marcos [Dias], and we squeezed them in,” Miller said of the play that led to his goal. “The centerback made a mistake, so we capitalized on the play. Jordan played me through, and I just chipped it over the keeper.”

Forward Malcolm Fry scored the second goal of the match for New England in the 88th minute, netting a ball from six yards out after Adebayo-Smith tapped the ball across the box for his second assist of the night. Fry’s third goal of the season secured the victory as Revolution II moves into second place in the Eastern Conference.

“I thought the effort was great. Tough conditions down here being hot and humid, but I thought you know, positive start to the game,” Head Coach Clint Peay said. “We created a number of quality chances, and I thought it was well deserved to win.”

Revolution goalkeeper Jacob Jackson recorded seven saves in the match to mark his second consecutive clean sheet, and now leads the team with three shutouts this season. Revolution Academy forward Olger Escobar made his first professional start, recording three shots, one on target, in his 71-minute appearance.

“I’m really proud of him. I’ve seen all the work he’s put in,” Miller said of Escobar, his Academy teammate. “He’s going to be very successful in his organization, and just needs to keep going.”

New England returns to action on Wednesday, July 12 against Crown Legacy FC at Gillette Stadium. The 11 a.m. match between the top two teams in the Eastern Conference will stream live on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
