Lionel Messi Inter Miami transfer live updates: Follow the latest as World Cup winner heads to MLS

Coming to America has been a bit of a tradition for elite footballers seeking a new adventure. This dates back to the days of the now defunct North American Soccer League. Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto, George Best, and of course, Pelé, among many other notable names, all played some of their final professional matches in the U.S.

MLS has tried to shake the “retirement league” label for several years now. And the league has certainly evolved to feature much younger prospects and more well-rounded sporting projects. To land Messi at 35 will harken back to the days when older stars were great for brand building.

That’s still the case, but the U.S. and in particular Miami, are ideal markets for the most famous footballer on the planet. The large contingent of Latin Americans in Miami, especially Argentine nationals, means that commercially, Messi in an Inter Miami kit will be a smashing success. Miami is also logistically a comfortable option for Messi and his family. Traveling to and from Buenos Aires won’t be a heavy lift, and culturally, the family will settle quickly in the city.

Additionally, the Argentina Football Association (AFA) has announced plans to build a national team training facility in the Miami area. It’ll also serve as AFA’s North American headquarters. Plus, the Copa América will be held in the U.S. next summer, so Messi will feel right at home when Argentina seek to defend the title they won in 2021.
