Former Louisville, Alabama WR Tyler Harrell transferring to Miami: How he fits with the Hurricanes

Miami picked up a commitment in the transfer portal Friday night from former Louisville and Alabama receiver Tyler Harrell. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Harrell, a 6-foot, 194-pound speedster who was a three-star recruit coming out of Mario Cristobal’s alma mater, Miami Columbus High, back in 2018, has 22 catches for 577 yards and six touchdowns to his credit over his college career — nearly all of it coming in the 2021 season with the Cardinals.
  • Harrell was expected to be a big-play threat who would help stretch the field when he transferred to Alabama last season, but didn’t suit up until late October and played a total of 33 snaps as he dealt with a right foot injury.

The Athletic’s instant analysis:

What does it mean for Miami’s receiver room?

The Hurricanes needed a big-play threat on the outside and Harrell — if healthy — can provide it. He reportedly ran a 4.24 at Louisville’s Pro Day back in 2021. The Hurricanes had nine other scholarship receivers on the roster this spring including true freshmen Nathaniel Joseph and Robby Washington.

Who could be next for the Hurricanes in the portal?

Harrell is the fourth pickup in the portal for Cristobal since spring ended last month. Miami is still looking to add quality pieces at defensive tackle, safety and receiver in the coming days. The Hurricanes hosted 6-foot-7, 283-pound ex-Louisiana-Monroe defensive tackle Anthony Campbell this week, and also had former Louisiana Tech all-conference first-team selection Keivie Rose on campus a week ago. Former Tulane safety Andre Sam, a grad transfer who was with defensive coordinator Lance Guidry at Marshall and McNeese State, is also a name to watch. Reedley College (Calif.) receiver Shemar Kirk, former North Texas linebacker Larry Nixon III and ex-Coffeyville College center Amaury Wiggins are other names on the radar.
