Women’s Soccer Drops Road Contest at Miami (OH)

Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio – The Marshall University women’s soccer team (1-4-2) fell to the Miami (OH) RedHawks (4-2-1), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

“That was a tough one today to come out of the game with nothing,” Herd women’s soccer head coach Michael Swan said after the match. “It was good to see us battle back after our performance last weekend, and we found a lot of positives in how we played today.”

Miami’s Makenna Morrison opened the scoring in the 37th minute. The match’s opening goal followed four first half saves from Herd goalkeeper Mira Pastoft. The sophomore from Denmark made five saves total.

Marshall had three shots in the opening half themselves, including a crossbar shot from senior Morgan White. Sunday’s match was a homecoming for the senior forward, White is a native of nearby Cincinnati, Ohio.

White would not be denied early in the second half, however. Her team-leading fifth goal of the season leveled the contest at 1-1 in the 51st minute. Junior Abi Hugh tallied her team-leading fourth assist.

The hosts responded immediately in the 54th minute, with RedHawks’ substitute Jaimie Tottleben putting Miami (OH) back in front less than three minutes later. Marshall were unable to find the equalizer despite heavy pressure late from Coach Swan’s side, as Miami (OH) came away with the 2-1 victory.

“Up until the last second we were banging on the door. Credit to the Miami backline and goalkeeper keeping those last few efforts of the net. Kat (Gonzalez) couldn’t have hit two better shots under pressure, one cleared off the line and the other denied by a finger tip, and we had one graze off the crossbar before that.”

White and Gonzalez led the Herd with two shots each in the contest. Marshall finished with six shots in total.
