Inter Miami catching fire, LAFC leading the way
It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time to take a look at the whole of Major League Soccer and update you all on the biggest events and storylines across the league.
Inter Miami and Leonardo Campana Starting to Roll
It’s hard to hear for the Orlando faithful, but the folks down in Ft. Lauderdale might’ve finally found something resembling competency on the football pitch. After a miserable start, including four-straight losses, the Herons have rebounded with three-straight league victories, and a win in the US Open Cup.
Phil Neville has his team playing with some cohesion and energy for the first time in two years, and a lot of that comes down to the play of their talismanic striker from South America.
No not Gonzalo Higuain, the former Argentine international who’s legitimately been one of the worst signings in MLS history, instead it’s young Ecuadorian striker Leonardo Campana who’s dominating up top for the Herons.
I’ve been a huge believer in Campana all season, and after taking over the starting role for Gonzalo Higuain, the Wolverhampton loanee has been superb. He now has five goals and two assists, directly contributing on all of Miami’s last seven goals.
The Ecuadorian is the star, but the likes of Deandre Yedlin and.. well primarily Yedlin and Campana plus general team cohesion has led to Miami’s resurgence. They’re still not *good* or a legit contender, but they have some foundation and a game-breaking attacker, two things they’ve lacked in their MLS existence.
LAFC Dominant Start has them Leading Supporters’ Shield Race
It’s still early days when talking about the Supporters’ Shield race, but LAFC are the early frontrunners once again.
Under new head coach Steve Cherundolo, the Black and Gold are back to their best. Carlos Vela is healthy and productive again, with four goals and three assists so far, while the new additions like Kellyn Acosta and Ilie Sanchez have brought real stability and cohesion in midfield and defensively.
No team in MLS is perfect, but LAFC are looking the part of a high end contender once again and are very capable of making a run in every competition this season.
