Coffey’s hat trick helps Colorado College top Miami 5-1 | Sports
It took three minutes for things to fall into place for Colorado College, and for them to fall apart for Miami (Ohio).
The Tigers started the second period down a goal, and ended it up by three, in an intense momentum swing that ended up being the difference in CC’s 5-1 win over Miami on Friday at Goggin Ice Center.
It started when the RedHawks turned the puck over in front of their goal, and Patrick Cozzi was able to gain control, lining up a shot. Miami goalie Logan Neaton was able to block the attempt, but Hugo Blixt fired the rebound for the first goal of his career, and a 2-1 lead for CC at the 8:04 mark of the second period.
That was followed up by a penalty, putting the Tigers on a power play. But things quickly got even worse for Miami when a second penalty was called, this time on Monte Graham for slashing. It gave CC a 5-on-3 advantage and the Tigers capitalized.
CC took its time setting up, and Tyler Coffey fielded a cross-ice pass from Danny Weight. The sophomore forward had a clear line to the net, and effortlessly slid the puck past Neaton for a 3-1 lead.
And Coffey wasn’t done.
The 5-on-3 advantage came to a close, and then so did the second power play. Now, at even strength, CC set up the same play, and once more, Coffey finished off a goal.
His second score made it 4-1. CC had trailed 1-0 at the end of the first period before Hunter McKown evened things up on a power play to open the second frame. From there, the Tigers embarked on their scoring barrage to take the three goal lead.
This was the fourth time Miami gave up four goals in a single period.
Coffey added another goal in the third period, giving him a hat trick, and a team-leading seven goals on the season.
In the opening period, CC held a shot advantage early, 7-2 over the first seven minutes, but it was Miami that scored first.
Nick Donato fired a shot with 7:57 left in the first, and Matt Barry positioned himself in front of the net for a rebound goal to take a 1-0 lead.
With the win, CC improved to 5-11-3, and 2-6-1 in conference play. The Tigers and the RedHawks square off again on Saturday for the second game of the series.
