Game Thread #103: Milwaukee Brewers (59-44) vs. Miami Marlins (37-67)
This Brewers-Marlins series continues to display the rapid changes that can occur in baseball at the deadline.
For the Brewers, they’ll rely on Aaron Civale in his fourth start for the team in hopes of bouncing back from last night’s disappointing loss. Civale’s run in Milwaukee has been bumpy so far, but in his short time as a Brewer, he has an impressive 18 strikeouts in 15 2⁄3 innings. The drawback is that he’s surrendered five home runs in that time.
For the Marlins, it’s clear their team will take different adaptations nearly every day as the deadline approaches. Today’s big news was that Jazz Chisholm Jr. will be sent to the New York Yankees in a trade. The Marlins promoted Max Meyer to make today’s start, a young, promising player who already impressed in the majors early this season. In three starts in April, Meyer posted a 2.12 ERA.
The Brewers lineup continues to bring out new shifts and variety from day-to-day. Brice Turang is set to bat leadoff with William Contreras in his usual two-hole. It’s on Sal Frelick to slot in behind him at the top of the order.
Alongside Frelick in the outfield is Blake Perkins in center field and Garrett Mitchell making the start in right field. In Christian Yelich’s absence, it will be important for Mitchell to perform as he will garner more playing time.
Joey Ortiz and Willy Adames will cover the left side of the infield. As Rhys Hoskins spends a shift at designated hitter, Jake Bauers will be the starting first baseman. Hoskins has been a galvanizing source of power for the Brewers lately, leading the team with five home runs in the last 30 days.
In transaction news, the Brewers placed pitcher Bryan Hudson on the 15-day injured list. A left oblique strain is forcing the lefty out, with the move retroactive to July 24. The Brewers then recalled Tyler Jay from Triple-A Nashville, another lefty for the bullpen. Jay has pitched just 4 2⁄3 innings in the majors this year with a 7.71 ERA. In his Triple-A time with the Mets organization, he tossed a 2.40 ERA in 41 1⁄3 innings.
First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. on Bally Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
