MATCH PREVIEW: Inter Miami CF to Visit Atlanta United This Saturday
Saturday’s fixture will present reunions for head coach ‘Tata’ Martino and forward Josef Martínez with their former side. Martino previously served as the head coach of Atlanta United from 2016 to 2018, during which time he led his former club to an MLS Cup title in 2018.
Martínez, meanwhile, spent six seasons in Atlanta, was named MLS MVP in 2018, and was a key part of their MLS Cup winning campaign. The Venezuelan goalscorer scored a staggering total of 98 goals during his run with Atlanta. Martínez has already scored against his former side this regular season, netting twice to help Inter Miami secure a 2-1 win at home over Atlanta in May in his first match against his former team.
The Georgia-based side will host Inter Miami being winless in their past two matchups, falling 1-2 against FC Cincinnati at home on Aug. 30 and most recently tying 2-2 with FC Dallas on the road on Sept. 2. Overall, Atlanta has registered 11 wins, eight losses and nine draws for a total of 42 points and sits sixth in the Eastern Conference standings.
Forward Giorgios Giakoumakis and midfielder Thiago Almada have been the team’s leader so far this campaign, recording 13 goals and two assists and nine goals and 14 assists respectively this regular season.
