Unique features of Mercedes-Benz Stadium
Opened in 2017, Mercedes-Benz Stadium features a retractable roof, a view of the Atlanta skyline and a massive video board called the Halo that goes in a full circle around the top of the stadium. Another popular selling point is reduced concession prices compared to most professional sports venues.
The signature futuristic design feature is the retractable roof, which features a eight translucent, triangular panels in a pinwheel layout. Humidity and outside temperatures determine whether the roof will be open or closed for a match.
How many fans can attend a match?
The capacity for an American football game is 71,000 fans, but it has a soccer-specific arrangement that creates a more intimate environment of 42,500. However, Atlanta United has expanded the soccer capacity up to 71,000 on a few big occasions, and Messi’s arrival certainly checks that box. Another big event coming up on the calendar in Atlanta is the 2026 World Cup, where “The Benz” will be one of the 11 host sites for the tournament.
Will Messi play on artificial turf in Atlanta?
Atlanta United’s home field features an artificial turf pitch. When Messi arrived in MLS, there were rumors that the 36-year-old would sit out of games on the artificial surface, which is uncommon in Europe and seen as an injury risk. However, Messi rejected that idea in an August interview.
“The truth is my youth was spent on artificial turf, my whole life was on that pitch. It’s been a while since I’ve played on artificial turf, but I have no problem adapting myself again,” the Inter Miami captain said.
Assuming Messi plays this weekend, fans can expect a great show. When the No. 10 played his first game against Atlanta United in Fort Lauderdale, he scored two goals back in July.
