Miami’s McGusty, FSU’s Cleveland Earn First ACC MBB Weekly Honors of New Year
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Miami graduate guard Kameron McGusty was selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, while Florida State forward Matthew Cleveland was chosen as the Freshman of the Week in the ACC’s weekly men’s basketball honors for Jan. 3.
ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.
A native of Katy, Texas, McGusty averaged 17.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals in Miami’s ACC wins over NC State (91-83) and Wake Forest (92-84) last week as the Hurricanes improved to 3-0 in league play. McGusty recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the victory over NC State, adding a season-high five assists. He then scored all 15 of his points against Wake Forest in the second half and also finished with a game-high eight rebounds.
Miami is off to its second-ever 3-0 start in ACC play and recorded back-to-back 90-point performances in ACC action for the first time in program history.
Cleveland recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds Saturday as Florida State topped NC State, 83-81, in the Seminoles’ first ACC road win of the season. The Atlanta, Georgia, native shot 5-for-10 from the field and made three second-half free throws, all of which came in the final 11 seconds of the game, to help Florida State go from a one-point lead to a four-point lead with four seconds left to play.
In the final 18 seconds of the second half, he drew two fouls, totaled two offensive rebounds and made three of four free throws. He totaled nine points, seven rebounds (five offensive), one steal and one blocked shot in the second half.
