Only-in-Miami costume ideas for Halloween 2026

You can be Elizabeth Holmes and Nathan Fielder anywhere, but you can only pull off the Smoke Shop Nun in Miami.

One of the best parts of living here is that locals never need permission to wear whatever feels good. Bikini top and cargo pants in the Design District? Sounds perfect. Butt cheeks out at the airport? Just another beautiful day in the Magic City.

We don’t believe in basic here, so Halloween is a time to really let our freak flags fly. And why not do that in celebration of our hometown? If you’re looking to skip the big-box costume stores and embrace what makes Miami interesting, newsworthy and sometimes downright bizarre, consider these IYKYK costumes.

Go as low-budget with your costume as Barbie Dream Fest went with its event this year.

Botched Barbie dream house at Barbie Dream Fest

Known as the Fyre Festival of Barbie fandom, this year’s Barbie Dream Fest in Fort Lauderdale went viral for all the wrong reasons. Fans, both young and old, of the blonde icon were stunned when their tickets promising a “larger than life” experience granted them access to some balloon arches and cardboard cutouts. To bring this costume to life, we suggest a DIY approach. Cardboard from Home Depot and different hues of pink paint will do the trick. Think kindergarten crafting project — cut one big piece of the board into a triangle for the roof and attach it to a square piece (the bottom of the house). Attach to your body with duct tape and blast “Pink” by Lizzo from a portable speaker.

Add an “only-in-Florida” spin to your store-bought iguana poster.

Frozen iguana

When the temperature in Miami is “falling iguanas,” locals know to leave the house with a winter coat. Why does it rain reptiles here? Because iguanas are an invasive species and, being cold-blooded, they go into a catatonic-like state to conserve energy when temps drop too low. To mimic this extremely regional phenomenon, all you need is a store-bought iguana costume and a homemade poster board forecast calling for raining iguanas. When someone takes a photo of you, remember to freeze!

For Halloween, nail Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval’s exact looks down to their T-shirts.

“GTA VI” characters

We got Halloween 2026 before “GTA VI,” but just barely. The long-awaited sequel drops this November, with Vice City as the backdrop. Channel your inner Lucia Caminos with this Baddie short-sleeved hoodie, ponytail, cutoff denim shorts and a red bandana — or mimic Jason Duval’s look with this surfing manatee T-shirt, brown pants and a blue bandana. Bonus points if you make this a couples’ costume.

Marcello Hernández repped for Miami at Met Gala, now rep Marcello in Miami for Halloween.

Marcello Hernandez at the Met Gala

Homegrown comedian Marcello Hernandez is always finding new ways to make Miami proud, like when he walked the Met Gala red carpet and shouted out Calle Ocho jewelers for his traditional Cuban and Dominican accessories. To pull off this look, skip the custom-made Thom Browne tuxedo for a more affordable option, but do pull the outfit together with an Angel de la Guarda on your left pocket, and a Dios me bendiga and larimar stone on your right sleeve. Bonus points if you purchase your accessories on 8th Street. Turn this into a couples’ costume by imitating his girlfriend’s stunning look.

In South Florida, clergy costumes come with McLarens.

The McLaren Pastor

For some people, the answer to the question “What would Jesus do?” is to ride onto the stage at church in a $400,000 765 LT McLaren. At least, that’s how Church by the Glades pastor David Hughes made his entrance one Sunday morning earlier this month. To capture this “huh?” moment, we suggest trying this McLaren racing jacket, with a short-sleeved clergy shirt underneath. (We’d love to know what the Smoke Shop Nun thinks about this unabashed display of excess, but who are we to judge?)

Miami-Dade Cowboy Sheriff

Show your friends that you’re up to date on the news cycle with this very of-the-moment costume. On Oct. 19, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office announced it would add $132 cowboy hats to its law enforcement uniform options, because why not. Save some taxpayer money (your money) with a knockoff police-officer uniform and budget cowboy hat. Make sure to say “howdy, deputy,” to all your friends.

This IYKYK costume is among the easiest to replicate.

Publix Rapper

When rapper ATMNoah donned a Publix uniform and rapped about his love of Pub Subs earlier this year, we all felt seen. Lucky for us, it’s easy to steal his look with this official Publix green polo and black logo apron. Accessorize the costume with a Pub Sub of your choice — it not only completes the look, but provides much-needed sustenance for your Halloween partying. Is there any better way to show your Florida pride?

Construction of signature bridge in downtown Miami
Unlike the Signature Bridge itself, this costume is quick and easy to construct.

The Signature Bridge

This one is a repeat from last year, because not much has changed since then! Unlike the bridge itself, this costume is quick and easy to construct. Roll beige craft paper into long “spider legs” and tape them into arches over your body. They don’t really need to connect to anything, nor does it need to look complete to come across as authentic to the I-395 structure.  To give it a 2026 update, tear some shreds into the paper. You can tell people, “It was supposed to look cool, but it’s kind of a mess now,” and still be perfectly on theme.

The Smoke Shop Nun may be the most “Miami” costume of all.

The Smoke Shop Nun

Back in March, @ONLYinDADE posted about a SWAT raid in Edgewater, and a star was born. A smoke shop was taking heat for alleged illegal activities, and the aerial footage showed heavily armored law enforcement officers detaining individuals. The video then panned to a seated nun in a royal blue habit. Who was she? What was she doing there? We were all dying to know. (New Times even tried getting in touch with her at her convent.) We found this dupe of her signature style on Etsy and suggest pairing it with a fake blunt (a cigar) to rep the smoke shop (the nun in the video was not smoking, so this is symbolic). Even if your friends don’t remember the viral moment, a smoking nun will always be a funny costume.

Miss the Tartan Army? Steal their look for Halloween.

Tartan Army

They drank our beer, stole our hearts, proposed to our staff and disappeared into the night (or back to Scotland, probably). The World Cup’s most beloved fans left a mark on our city that won’t soon be erased. If you’re missing them as much as we are, throw on a kilt and hoist a set of bagpipes on your shoulder. This one isn’t just for the guys. We love a Tartan lass, too.
