Man fires at Miami apartment with 5 sleeping, wounds man after argument over drugs


MIAMI – A 24-year-old man appeared in Miami-Dade County court on Wednesday to face charges over a shooting that wounded a 45-year-old man in November in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.

Eltohm Matute fired at the man at about 1 a.m., on Nov. 18 after there was an argument over drugs at the Los Brother’s L.A. Restaurant, according to Detective Natasha Adley, an arrest warrant shows.

Matute was in a car. The driver later reported that Matute had told him that he wanted to help someone, but he was not aware that Matute’s idea of helping was to shoot at the man, according to Adley.

Officers found the man wounded after Shot Spotter tech detected 11 rounds were fired near the intersection of Southwest Fifth Street and 16 Avenue in the Riverside area, according to Adley.

A police officer also reported the shooting had shattered the glass door of a nearby apartment on Fifth Street where five people were sleeping, according to Adley.

Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Matute on Tuesday morning in Broward County on the Dec. 13 warrant and booked him at the county’s main jail in Fort Lauderdale.

After his quick extradition, Miami-Dade correctional officers booked Matute on Tuesday night at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He remained there on Wednesday afternoon.

Matute was facing five counts of shooting a deadly missile and one count of premeditated attempted murder, county records show.
