Emory Williams injury updates — Miami Hurricanes quarterback suffers broken arm that ‘ends the season’ for football star

Van Dyke injury

On UM’s October 14 game, then-starting QB Tyler Van Dyke was hit, injuring his right knee, back and ribs.

This led him to miss the October 21 game against Clemson, giving Williams his first collegiate start.

Van Dyke then returned to play wearing a brace against last week’s Virginia game; he was not seen using a brace at last night’s game.

Cristobal on the QB position

Following Van Dyke’s injury earlier in October, Head Coach of UM, Cristobal, spoke on the nature of the QB position.

“It’s a tough position to be in,’’ Cristobal told WQAM’s Joe Rose.

He noted the physicality of the role: “As a quarterback, you’re banged up. I know they’re frustrated. We’re all frustrated as a team. Our approach always is to find a way to make it work,”

“We turn over every rock. I don’t think anyone can fathom the amount of time we invest to get things right, how we’re always considering every way possible to get every position better,” he continued.

Fans wanted Williams

Ahead of the UM v. FSU game last night, fans were pushing for William’s to start, hoping the fresh blood would bring in a win for the team if Van Dyke was benched.

Coach Cristobal refused to hint at who would start, saying: ” I appreciate the question and I would respectfully say this: Just from a game-planning standpoint and a team-dynamic standpoint, I wouldn’t use this forum to discuss a personnel move, especially at that position, because it affects so many different things.”

He did note that the starting position was based on merit and performance.

“What I would always say is that we’re always competing at every position, we’re always assessing and we always make the decisions that give us the best chance to win. Respectfully, we kind of keep everything regarding personnel moves in-house and tight,” explained Cristobal.

Williams autograph available

Although just a freshman for the UM football team, the young QB does have autographs available for $57 on the team website.

According to the website, Williams is also able to make appearances and post to social media upon request.

Van Dyke took over for Williams

Veteran QB Van Dyke was ousted by Williams after starting for the team in previous games.

For the last few minutes of last night’s game, the team put him back in as QB where he picked up two late first downs.

He threw a game-ending pass when it was intercepted by FSU’s Jarrian Jones.

Coach sees ‘bright future’ for QBs

After William’s injury last night, veteran QB Tyler Van Dyke stepped in to finish out the last few minutes of the game.

Coach Cristobal spoke on their respective futures: ““He has a super bright future and the truth of the matter I think Tyler Van Dyke has a super bright future and there was a rough patch there and we make a decision, but I think everybody jumps to conclusions too quickly.

Specifically about Van Dyke he said: “I think Tyler is an awesome young man. I thought it was a very tough decision. He handled it extremely well. He’s been a great quarterback, he’s gonna be a great quarterback again.”

He then spoke about both player’s quality.

“Both those guy, it’s what you want for your own son to be like and follow you know guys like that,” said the coach.
