Messi and Beckham want another Barcelona player to reinforce Inter Miami

Inter Miami‘s close season has made it clear that they still need to strengthen to reach a more competitive level in MLS.

The arrival of former Barcelona players Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, along with Leo Messi, has given them a new look, but not enough to be in the playoffs.

There are still many lines that the team led by Tata Martino needs to reinforce to be at the level of the competition.

To achieve this goal, the team have set their sights on another Barcelona player, Sergi Roberto.

At 31, the Spaniard has lost importance in the squad of his coach Xavi Hernandez and aware of this, he is analyzing where to go and one of the countries that most seduces him is the United States.

He is fully aware of his current role in the team as the 16th player with the most minutes (224) and only two starts in 11 official matches against Villarreal and Osasuna.

The Spanish player has already made it public that he would like to play in the MLS and, in addition, the good references that come to him from several former teammates and friends encourage him to face a new adventure in this competition.

“I do not face this season as my last season at Barcelona, I do not think beyond enjoying the moment, the club of my life,” he said.

“I’m lucky, and I don’t think about the future.

“I like the United States, I always come here, especially to New York.

“I like the MLS, I already had friends who played like Fontas, Ilie… it is a country and a league where I would like to play but in a few years.

“I don’t see it in the near future, I value it in the long term. The MLS will be a few years from now.”

Sergi Roberto’s beginnings at Barcelona

Sergi Roberto, born on February 7, 1992, left Reus at 14 to step join La Masia.

Coming from Nastic de Tarragona, the midfielder joined the club’s B team under Luis Enrique in the 2009/10 season.

The Catalan made his official debut with the first team on November 10, 2010, in a Copa del Rey match at Camp Nou against Ceuta (5-1).

Sergi Roberto made the definitive leap to the first team in the summer of 2013 under the orders of Gerardo Martino, and with the number 24 on his back, he played 27 games, 17 in La Liga, six in the Copa del Rey and four in the Champions League.

Roberto gradually gained minutes in the first team until he consolidated his place in the starting line-up in the 2015/16 season, when he began to alternate the position of midfielder with that of fullback.

He was a key player in the historic comeback at the Camp Nou against Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16, on March 8, 2017, as he became the architect of the sixth goal, in the 93rd minute, which sent Barcelona into the quarterfinals.

In the summer of 2018, Roberto was elected fourth captain of the team and thus joined Leo Messi, Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique.

After a season marked by fitness issues, the youth product extended his contract and in the 2022-23 season, he was crowned league champion, playing 33 games and helping the team with four goals and three assists.
