Miami football former 4-star OL and starter Laurence Seymore transferring

Matt Zenitz of On3 was the first to report on Saturday morning that the Miami football team lost former four-star guard and starter Laurence Seymore to the transfer portal. Seymore signed with Miami in the 2021 class. As a true freshman in 2021, Seymore made appearances versus Central Connecticut State and Duke.

After maintaining his redshirt season in 2021, Seymore played in six games with three starts in 2022. Seymore was the 183rd prospect, 11th interior offensive lineman and 27th in Florida in the 2021 class per the 247 Sports Composite rankings. Seymore allowed three sacks and eight pressures in 133 pass-blocking snaps in 2022.

The addition of Javion Cohen as a transfer from Alabama and the returns of Jalen Rivers and potentially Zion Nelson meant that Seymore would be relegated to returning as a backup in 2023. Mario Cristobal and OL coach Alex Mirabal signing their own players in the last two classes were projected to also impact Seymore’s future.

The 6’2 and 315-pound Seymore also had to compete with 6-6 and 350-pound sophomore Anez Cooper for snaps. Jonathan Denis who transferred to Miami from Oregon during the 2022 offseason also projects as a backup for the Hurricanes at guard in 2023. Denis is listed on the depth chart as the second-team center.

Mirabal stated earlier this week as reported by multiple sources that Seymore needed to learn how to properly practice and compete at a standard expected from him and Cristobal. Seymore was still attempting to reach that level according to Mirabal. Miami has added a lot of size on the OL during the 2023 offseason.

Five OL signed with the Miami football program in the Class of 2023. The additions of Cohen and center Matt Lee from Central Florida also upgrade the experience, depth and talent to the 2023 Miami OL. The majority of the OL on the 2023 Miami roster are bigger than Seymore. Cristobal has made size on the OL a point of emphasis.

Seymore becomes the 26th transfer lost by Miami since the end of the 2023 season. Including freshmen, Miami has added 41 new players to the 2023 roster. Since being hired in December 2021, Cristobal and Mirabal have remade almost the entire OL. Under Cristobal, the OL will continue to be the foundation for Miami.
