Miami lands commitment from 2024 blue-chip defensive tackle: What this means for Hurricanes

Artavius Jones, a four-star defensive tackle from Blountstown (Fla.) High School, announced his commitment to Miami on Friday. Here’s what you need to know:

• Jones, ranked No. 20 at his position and No. 165 overall in the 247Sports Composite, chose the Hurricanes over Florida State, Tennessee and UCF.
• He lists himself at 6-foot-4, 305 pounds in his social media profile and also competed in track and field and basketball.
• Jones played on both the offensive and defensive line for Blountstown, leading his team to a 9-5 record and the state semifinals.
• He finished his junior season totaling 58 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 3½ sacks and eight receptions for 142 yards and a score.

What this means for Miami

Miami badly needed to recruit interior defensive linemen this cycle and landing Jones gives them a blue-chip talent in the class it didn’t have before.

The Hurricanes, who picked up a pledge from local 6-foot-1, 250-pound three-star defensive lineman Daylan Russell back in May, lost to Ohio State in a battle for five-star Justin Scott from Chicago and Oklahoma for four-star Jayden Jackson out of Bradenton (Fla.).

Miami is still awaiting decisions from five-star Aydin Breland of Santa Ana (Calif.), five-star David Stone of Bradenton (Fla.) and top-100 and four-star Kamarion Franklin from Lake Cormorant (Miss.). They hosted all three in June.

Backstory

Jones took official visits to Miami and UCF in June and an unofficial to Tennessee in late May. The Hurricanes now have 18 commitments including six blue-chip pledges this cycle. The class moved up three spots to 13th in the team rankings with Jones’ pledge.
