Lionel Messi is set to reunite with Tata Martino in MLS, with Fox Sports reporting the former Barcelona and Argentina manager will become Inter Miami’s next head coach.

Martino, who won the 2018 MLS Cup with Atlanta United as well, could reportedly be introduced as soon as Wednesday.

He and Messi worked together for one season at Barcelona from 2013-14, and then from 2014-16 with the Albiceleste, where Martino led the team to two consecutive Copa America finals appearances.

Martino most recently manned the Mexican national team at the World Cup in Qatar, but was fired after his squad failed to advance past the group stage.

His reported arrival in Miami comes after the ouster of previous coach Phil Neville earlier this month amid the team’s poor form.

While Messi has yet to finalize his move to Miami, he announced his intention to join the club earlier this month, and the team wished him a happy 36th birthday on social media over the weekend.

He won’t be the only former player of Martino’s in South Beach, as Miami recently announced the arrival of Messi’s ex-Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets as well.

Messi’s debut has been penciled in for July 21 in the Leagues Cup vs. Mexican side Cruz Azul, while Mundo Deportivo say that the club wants to introduce the No. 10 and Busquets to home fans on July 16.

Speaking to Argentinian Public Television in his native country, he said, ‘Now there will be a few days of vacation and then I will start in my new city, my new club. I am very excited.’

Furthermore, Miami intends to bid for longtime Barca left-back Jordi Alba, as Marca reported.

Miami is currently last in the Eastern Conference with just 15 points from 18 games.
