Cornerback is position of need for 2024 Miami football class

Cornerback and edge rusher are the primary positions the Miami football program is missing in the 2024 class. Miami has commitments from three-star safeties Dylan Day and Isaiah Thomas in the 2024 class. There will be seven new CBs on the 2023 Miami roster made up of freshmen and FBS and junior college transfers.

Damari Brown and Robert Stafford were four-star CB signees in the 2023 class. Davonte Brown from Central Florida (the brother of Damari), Jaden Davis from Oklahoma and Jadais Richard from Vanderbilt join Miami as FBS transfers. Demetrius Freeney is a junior college transfer College of San Mateo in California.

The Miami football program hosted only three CBs during June. Freeney’s teammate at San Mateo, Sione Laulea visited Miami the weekend of June 2, five-star IMG Academy CB Ellis Robinson IV visited Miami the weekend of June 9. Romanas Frederique Jr. from St. Thomas Aquinas visited Miami during the weekend of June 23.

Davonte Brown has two seasons of eligibility remaining, Davis has one, and Freeney and Richard have three. Te’Cory Couch is the only returning CB on the 2023 Miami roster entering his final season of eligibility. Miami lost eight defensive backs after the 2022 season and needs to continue adding depth in the secondary.

Four schools are standing out for Laulea in a tight competition. Miami leads with a 32.9 percent chance for a commitment from Laulea, USC is second at 21.8 percent, Utah is third at 18.7 percent and Penn State is 15.6 percent according to On3. Frederique Jr. is committed to West Virginia and Robinson is committed to Georgia.

Miami hosted five safeties including Day and Thomas. There is always potential to move a safety to CB. With at least Couch and Davis moving on following the 2023 season, Miami has to add depth for 2023. Miami has offered 36 CBs in the 2024 recruiting class. Going forward, CB will be a position to watch in the 2024 class.
