Baggage system outage causing massive delays at Miami International Airport – NBC 6 South Florida

Travelers at Miami International Airport are experiencing major problems Saturday due to an outage involving the airport’s baggage system.

The airport’s public information officer told NBC6 in a statement that the system which delivers checked bags for the airlines in the South Terminal experienced an outage, forcing bags to be checked in the Central Terminal.

“Travelers departing from concourses H or J should give themselves extra time at MIA today if they are checking any bags,” the statement said in part.

Over 500 flights were delayed as of Saturday night with 45 flights be canceled.

“TSA is working to address disruptions at Miami International Airport with the checked bag screening equipment, which is currently not operating at full capacity,” the agency said in a statement. “TSA worked closely throughout the day with the airlines and airport to initiate alternate processes to screen the checked baggage of travelers departing MIA.

“While TSA is optimistic this situation will be resolved soon, we encourage all travelers to allow ample time for their checked baggage to be screened ahead of their flight departure,” the statement continued to read.
