The Marlins have yet to make a determination as to whether they will place center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the injured list a day after he injured his right foot colliding with the wall in left-center field.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said Sunday morning that Chisholm was dealing with some “turf toe” and was set to see a specialist to determine the extent of the injury.

Schumaker said the team would make the decision on whether or not Chisholm Jr. needed an IL stint after the visit.

“We’re not going to jump to conclusions until the specialist sees him,” Schumaker said. “Once he does, we’ll go from there.”

Chisholm injured himself trying to make a play to end the eighth inning and keep the Marlins tied with the Reds in Saturday’s game. The Marlins initially said Chisholm Jr. suffered a right foot contusion. Chisholm hobbled to the dugout after the play.

Chisholm’s injury comes just as he appeared to be gaining some momentum at the plate with hits in five of his past six games, including home runs in back-to-back outings.

If Chisholm goes on the IL, it would further deplete an outfield that will already lose Jesus Sanchez for the immediate future. Sanchez was placed on the 10-day IL Sunday with a right hamstring strain.

Sanchez left after the first inning after making a diving grab to rob Tyler Stephenson of a hit. He had previously experienced hamstring discomfort in the ninth inning of the Marlins’ 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. Sanchez entered Saturday hitting .390 (16 for 41) with seven doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI over his previous 13 games.

“It was actually when he popped up after the dive, which is a bummer,” Schumaker said. “I had never seen something like that happen after the dive.”

Schumaker said without Chisholm and Sanchez, the team will have to use different combinations in the outfield that would include Jon Berti, Garrett Hampson and Peyton Burdick potentially each playing center field. Hampson is starting in center field for the Marlins’ series finale against the Reds on Sunday.

Sanchez’s placement on the IL coincided with some good news as Garrett Cooper returned to the starting lineup Sunday after dealing with an inner ear infection. Cooper missed the previous 11 games.
