Mansion Global Daily: Auction of Indonesian Islands Postponed Amid Public Outcry

Auction of Indonesian Islands Postponed Amid Public Outcry

The auction of the exclusive licensed rights to the Widi Reserve, more than 100 environmentally protected islands that cover 25,000 acres in Indonesia, has been postponed until late January amid public outcry. The auction had been scheduled for Dec. 8 by Sotheby’s, which marketed the islands as an unworldly paradise with potential for luxury eco-resorts. Environmental groups protested the sale, saying that the privatization and development of the islands could cause ecological damage and interfere with life in coastal communities. Indonesia’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries said earlier last week that PT Leadership Islands Indonesia, the company managing the islands, had not obtained the proper licenses to proceed with the auction.
