Miami CB Tyrique Stevenson accepts Senior Bowl invite, moves on from Hurricanes football ahead of NFL Draft

Miami cornerback Tyrique Stevenson accepted an invite to the Reese’s Senior Bowl, one of a few postseason showcases where veteran college football talent can play in an all-star game of sorts. That means Stevenson is most off to the NFL Draft, as only draft eligible fourth-year players that are foregoing any remaining eligibility are allowed to participate in senior bowls, according to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson.

Stevenson joins Miami teammate Will Mallory, who already accepted his invitation.

A fourth-year junior in terms of eligibility, Stevenson transferred to Miami from Georgia ahead of the 2021 season. He played in 11 games and made 10 starts, missing a couple due to injury, and finished as the Hurricanes’ top defensive back, earning All-ACC Honorable Mention honors after registering 43 tackles, 2.5 for a loss, four pass breakups and one interception.

He also earned a spot on 247Sports’ All-Transfer Team. Rather than declaring for the NFL Draft, Stevenson elected to return to Miami and play under new coach Mario Cristobal.

“The standard now is holding everybody way more accountable,” Stevenson said. “You can see it with the meetings we are having and how we are putting in the extra work. There are more guys that want to compete with the man next to them because that is what helps us get better. It is a different vibe this summer. It is all about the work.”

Stevenson again missed two games due to injury in 2022, but retained his starting duties in the secondary while also serving as a punt returner on occasion. He finished the year with 25 total tackles, 1.5 for a loss, nine pass breakups and two interceptions.

“I broke my records from last year,” Stevenson said. “I set the record last year in squat at 465 pounds and now I did 550 this year. The power clean record I set last year was at 315 pounds and this year I did 325 pounds. Coach Feld pushed me in the weight room and I am grateful for that. I am feeling great physically now. I was able to get my body right after the spring and I am feeling amazing going into fall camp.”

Stevenson spent two seasons at Georgia before transferring to Miami. He played in 24 games with the Bulldogs, though most of that time was spent as a reserve as he was only a starter in four games.

He finished his Georgia career with 47 total tackles — 34 of which came in his last year with the program — two tackles for loss and 10 pass breakups. One of those tackles for loss and half of those pass breakups occurred in the 2020 season, as well.

Stevenson signed with Georgia in 2019 out of Homestead (Fla.) Miami Southridge High School. A five-star prospect in the Top247, he ranked as the No. 20 prospect nationally, No. 2 cornerback and No. 3 prospect in the state of Florida.
