Miami Valley sees cold temperatures to start Winter Safety Awareness Week – WHIO TV 7 and WHIO Radio

DAYTON — The coldest temperatures to hit the Miami Valley since March are here and just in time for Winter Safety Awareness Week.

We spoke with people about what they can do to make sure they stay safe this winter.

It has been a cold weekend. We saw snow Saturday and are expecting cold temperatures Sunday night.

That winter chill is in the air and for some, it’s a tough reminder of what’s to come.

“I like the seasons,” said Julia Fulk of Springfield. “I like that the seasons change but no, no. I don’t like to shiver.”

Low temperatures are expected to drop into the teens and twenties this week.

“I mean it’s kind of disrespectful,” said Aaron Davis. “I miss the sun already.”

News Center 7′s Brandon Lewis says the cold weather has arrived just in time for Winter Safety Awareness Week here in Ohio.

The Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness will encourage Ohioans to prepare their homes and vehicles for winter during the next several days.

Some of their recommendations include:

  • Gathering supplies and restocking disaster supply kits
  • Making sure auxiliary heaters and fireplaces are adequately maintained and serviced
  • Keeping your gas tank at least half full
  • Maintaining proper tire pressure

After this weekend’s snow, Marcus Kingery of Champaign County made sure to get a new snow brush for his car.

“I check my snow blower to make sure it’s running and make sure there’s no maintenance that needs to be done on it,” he said. “Make sure I have enough fuel in my fuel can.”

Kingery is a Boy Scout leader and makes sure he is prepared.

“I always make sure I have essential stuff in the vehicle in case there’s an issue with getting stranded someplace,” he told Lewis.

And what helps others is keeping warm inside.

“One thing that we do is that we always put the foam stoppers on our front door and the door to our garage because of that draft that comes in,” said Fulk. “I feel like that helps.”

“Typically, we just stay in the house, keep the heat on, wrapped up in a blanket, that’s about it,” Davis said.

The Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness also said it’s good to know your area’s risk for winter storms.
