Miami football first time nearly 60 years without TD consecutive games

The Miami football team has gone 148:06 without a touchdown in nearly 2.5 games. A 34-yard  Jake Garcia to Will Mallory touchdown pass with 13:06 remaining in the third quarter nearly three games ago against Duke was the last time Miami reached the end zone for six points. Miami has not scored a TD in its last two games.

Miami defeated Virginia 14-12 with four Andres Borregales field goals and a two-point try by Garcia in the fourth overtime to give Miami the win. The Hurricanes lost 45-3 to Florida State last week. By most accounts, this is the first time Miami has failed to score a TD in consecutive games since 1964.

The last time Miami failed to score a TD in consecutive games they were ironically shutout 14-0 in the season opener by Florida State and lost 20-0 in the second week of the season to Georgia Tech. Miami plays at Georgia Tech on Saturday after losing to Florida State last weekend. Miami lost 9-7 to California in week three in 1964.

The Miami football team finished the 1964 season 4-5-1 and averaged 14.7 points per game which was 62nd out of 120 Division I teams. After starting the 1964 season 0-4-1 Miami won four straight games. Miami defeated Detroit 10-7 on October 30 for its first win of the 1964 season.

This is a completely different era of offense. Miami is averaging 24.7 PPG which is 91st nationally. It could be argued that not scoring a touchdown for nearly 10 quarters this season is worse than in 1964 getting shutout in consecutive games. The 2022 offense has regressed significantly since last season.

The 1964 team improved from 1963 when Miami averaged 11.6 PPG which was 99th of 120 teams nationally. Miami scored 13 points in its first four games in 1963 and only scored one TD. The Hurricanes finished 23rd nationally in 2021 averaging 34.1 PPG. The hiring of new offensive coordinator Josh Gattis has been second-guessed.

Miami has significantly underperformed offensively in 2022. Head coach Mario Cristobal will have a decision to make regarding Gattis at the end of the season. Miami has struggled offensively and has not had the run and pass in synch for a game this season. Miami has matched extremely old program records in 2022.
