The New York Mets early postseason exit causes MLS chaos and angers Inter Miami

Inter Miami is not happy. The team lead by David Beckham and real estate mogul Jorge Mas has openly expressed their outrage following the third venue change ahead of the October 17th matchup against New York City FC. The game will not be played at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets.

NYCFC still plays their games at Yankee Stadium, the legendary baseball stadium used by the Yankees. It hasn’t been ideal for them to play all of their games in a venue that is designed for baseball, but it has been their reality ever since entering the MLS in 2015 while they wait on construction approval of a new stadium in Queens.

Meanwhile, Inter Miami is entering the second postseason berth of their three-year existence and is very disappointed to see that they will do so in a baseball purposed stadium that is a neutral ground: the New York Mets’ Citi Field.

Yankee Stadium can not be used for the 1st round MLS Cup Playoffs game between NYCFC and Inter Miami due to the Yankees playing their Division series against the Cleveland Guardians. So the MLS was working with the New York Red Bulls to see if they would be willing to host the game (which takes place two days before NYCFC vs Miami).

Red Bull Arena would have made sense, but then the Mets sudden playoff elimination against the San Diego Padres prompted other plans.

Jorge Mas: “There is no way we are playing at Citi Field”

Jorge Mas, co-owner of Inter Miami, assured fans on Twitter that there was no way this would happen.

“There is no way this game is being played at a baseball stadium that isn’t their home field… If they don’t want to play at a soccer specific stadium, they should move it to the Meadowlands instead”, Mas tweeted.

Even Inter Miami’s official social media accounts couldn’t believe that the venue change was made official: “Another curveball, we are now playing at Citi Field, the Mets’ baseball stadium.” They then proceeded to end their statement with a clear: “We don’t get it either…”

MLS fans will be refunded by Ticketmaster afer relocation of NYCFC vs Inter Miami game

Ticketmaster will contact any fan who has already purchased an individual ticket through the ticket marketplace, and process a refund for them. They would need to re-purchase an individual ticket afterwards if they would still like to attend.

The first round MLS Cup Playoffs game between NYCFC and Inter Miami will take place at 7:00pm EST on Monday October 17th at Citi Field.
