UNC-Miami: Mack Brown Postgame

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — North Carolina moved to the top of the Coastal Division by way of a 27-24 win over Miami on Saturday night—UNC’s fourth straight win over the Hurricanes.

UNC got a 14-0 lead by way of Drake Maye’s 74-yard touchdown pass to J.J. Jones followed by an 8-play 98-yard UNC touchdown drive. The Hurricanes closed the half with two quick scores to make it 21-17 at the break after Maye’s interception led to a Miami field goal. While the offense was unable to get back in the endzone, the defense played some of its best football of the season in the second half. UNC shut down the Miami run game (23 carries for 41 yards) and dared Tyler Van Dyke (42-57 for 496 yards) to win it with his arm — and he almost did, until the Tar Heels sealed the win when DeAndre Boykins intercepted a pass from Van Dyke with eight seconds remaining. Power Echols and Cedric Gray led the defense with a combined 27 tackles. Maye’s line was 19-of-28 for 309 yards, with two TDs and two interceptions.

The 5-1 Tar Heels will face in-state rival Duke at Wade Wallace Stadium next Saturday at 8 p.m.
