Bearcat Men Dominate In Home Opener, Split Dual With Miami (OH)



CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams collected 20 event wins in their home opener against Miami (OH) on Saturday, Oct. 8.
 
The Bearcats split the dual with the RedHawks at the Keating Aquatic Center. The men’s team won in commanding fashion, 216 to 84, while the women fell just short, 166 to 134.
 
The Bearcats were able to sweep wins in the 400-yard medley relay, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard breaststroke.
 
Junior Hunter Gubeno and graduate student Conner Funke led the way for the men’s team that secured 13 total event wins. Both were part of the men’s 400-yard medley relay team that won in a time of 3:18.67.
 
Gubeno also won the 100-yard (49.65) and 200-yard backstroke (1:50.16) while Funke claimed victories in the 100-yard (55.81) and 200-yard breaststroke (55.81).
 
The women’s dual was close throughout the entire meet. Freshmen Grace Gavin and Joleigh Crye picked up three event wins each, including a 400-yard medley relay victory with a time of 3:49.31.
 
Gavin won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:08.10 and the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.75. The Bearcats claimed the top four spots in the 100-yard backstroke.
 
For the second straight meet, Crye picked up event wins in both the 100-yard butterfly (56.47) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.88).
 
In the men’s 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, the Bearcats secured the top four spots, with freshman Maksim Maskalenka earning his first event win of the season in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.43) and Funke winning the 200-yard backstroke.
 
The Bearcat men also secured the top four spots in both the 100-yard and 200-yard butterfly event with junior Tommy Eaton finishing as the top performer at 49.11 in the 100-yard and 1:50.17 in the 200-yard.

The Bearcats will head over to Morgantown, West Virginia, to compete against the University of West Virginia in a two-day dual meet on Oct. 21-22.
