How many more chances for Sixto Sanchez with Miami Marlins?

Sixto Sanchez and the Miami Marlins have already had issues. There were questions as to how much effort Sanchez had been putting in regarding his rehab for his shoulder woes, with reports in the 2021-22 offseason indicating that the Marlins had nothing positive to say about the young pitcher.

Any positive feelings that had been established over the course of the 2022 season may be coming to an end. According to Jordan McPherson from the Miami Herald, Sanchez is set to undergo another procedure on his shoulder on October 5. In theory, he will be ready for spring training.

Miami Marlins may have limit to patience with Sixto Sanchez

This will be the second procedure he has had on his shoulder. Sanchez had issues during spring training in 2021, eventually needing surgery to repair a torn posterior capsule in his right shoulder. He had eventually begun a comeback from that in July when he felt discomfort that necessitated a cortisone shot. While that injection helped, at least temporarily, Sanchez will need to go under the knife yet again.

There was a time when Sanchez appeared to be a key part of the Marlins’ future. He had been a key part of their push to the postseason in 2020, posting a 3.49 ERA and a 1.205 WHiP in his 39 innings, striking out 33 batters with 11 walks. Sanchez even started a pair of games in the playoffs, showing how much the Marlins trusted him at that point.

Those were also the last games that he pitched. Sanchez has been sidelined with his shoulder woes since that point, and while he is going to be 24 years old at the start of the 2023 campaign, it is fair to wonder if he will be able to recapture the form that made him a top prospect and a key part of the Marlins future, especially since he has been bypassed in the pecking order.

It also leads to questions about his future in Miami. Those rumblings that the organization is displeased with Sanchez may be quiet, but they have not exactly issued any positive proclamations either. If he has any further setbacks or attitude questions, the Marlins may not have as long of a leash this time around.

Sixto Sanchez is still having issues with his troublesome shoulder. At some point, if things do not change, the Miami Marlins may run out of patience.
