Copa Airlines Celebrates its 75th Anniversary in Miami


Copa Airlines executives and Miami-Dade County officials gathered at Miami International Airport (MIA) on September 14 to celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary and the airline’s 33 years of operation at MIA.

During the event, the Boeing 737-800 NG (HP-1841) was welcomed with the company’s special anniversary livery. Copa chose Miami as its first U.S. destination on December 1, 1989, now MIA is one of the airline’s top international markets.

Copa Airlines has been the bridge connecting South Florida to Latin America for more than 30 years, and we are honored to partner with the hard-working team at Miami International Airport to ensure we keep the local community connected to their friends, families and businesses throughout the Americas,» said Marco Ocando, Senior Director of Marketing, Communications and Frequent Flyer Program for Copa Airlines.

Copa currently offers six daily flights to Miami and has a capacity of 13,372 seats per week, an 8.8% increase over 2019 levels. MIA is the airline’s largest market in the United States.

With more than 800,000 passengers per year, Panama is the top Central American destination moving the most travelers at Miami Airport and the 10th busiest international market overall.

Copa has been an important partner in our community since 1989 and we wish them continued success in the decades to come,» said Daniella Levine Cava, Mayor of Miami-Dade County.

Panama City (PTY) is part of the 10 Central American destinations offered by Miami International Airport (MIA) along with: Belize City (BZE), Guatemala City (GUA), Liberia (LIR), Managua (MGA), Roatán (RTB), San José de Costa Rica (SJO), San Pedro Sula (SAP), San Salvador (SAL) and Tegucigalpa (XPL).

As a region, Central America is MIA’s second most active trading partner by weight and fourth most active by value, with 133,033 tons of cargo worth USD 6450 million in 2021.
