- ⚖️ A judge ruled Monday on how much lawyers will receive for working on the Surfside condo collapse settlement.
- 🚢 PortMiami is receiving $16 million from the RAISE grant from the federal government.

Here are the top five stories in Miami today:
1. Lawyers who helped settle the Surfside condo collapse case for $1.1 billion for victims were awarded more than $70 million in fees Monday by a judge. The award was less than the $100 million attorneys with the 17 firms had sought. The case was settled in only a year’s time and victims received more than is usual due to the nature of the case. The condo collapse tragically claimed 98 lives. (WUSF)
2. An investigation is underway after a leader with Miami Beach’s Parks and Recreation Department, Peniel Janvier or PJ, lost his life in a drowning incident at Scott Raikow Center, a popular pool and summer camp. The incident occurred August 16, during the last week of summer camp at the center. (WPLG Local 10)
3. A funeral mass was held at St. Kevin Catholic Church for Florida Department of Law Enforcement Special Agent Jose Perez at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. Perez died on August 20 after fighting for his life for two weeks in the hospital after being hit in a DUI crash. (WSVN, WPLG Local 10)
4. Miami Dade College’s (MDC) School of Engineering and Technology (EnTec) has created the Javier Coto Scholarship in honor of late MDC professor Javier Coto. The scholarship will be available to students who enroll in tech courses in topics including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, app development and more. 5. The U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced that PortMiami is the beneficiary of a $16 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant for its NetZero: Cargo Mobility Optimization and Resiliency Project. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava thanked the Biden Administration and members of Congress for securing the funding. Miami-Dade aims to become one of Florida’s most active ports. - State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle is set to hold a news conference this afternoon with the county’s inspector general, Felix Jimenez over alleged pending charges against Miami-Dade County Commissioner Joe Martinez. (WPLG Local 10)
- Miami-Dade County Commissioner Joe Martinez released a statement defending his name stating, “… for now, Commissioner Martinez makes clear that he is innocent of any wrongdoing and intends to aggressively work to clear his name.” (WSVN)
- The intelligence community has been working with the FBI since mid-May of this year to examine some of the classified documents taken from former President Trump’s residence at Mar-a-Lago to determine their level of classification, according to multiple reports. The Justice Department is arguing a special master is unnecessary since they already analyzed the documents. (Subscription: WSJ, Free: CNN)
- The Miami Dolphins announced on Monday that they have released running back Sony Michel, offensive lineman Adam Pankey, wide receiver Mohamed Sanu Sr. and defensive back Quincy Wilson. (Miami Dolphins)
