Miami Dade College to Celebrate Annual I AM MDC Day Sept. 6

Wolfson Campus event will recognize Hall of Fame alumnus and radio and television personality Javier Romero

Miami, August 23, 2022 Miami Dade College (MDC) is gearing to celebrate once again I AM MDC Day, its annual day of giving and pride, on Tuesday, Sept. 6, which marks the day the College first opened its doors in 1960. With the theme “Saving Dreams,” this year, I AM MDC Day is expanding fundraising opportunities to the entire college community, allowing all schools to raise funds in support of their programs.

As in years past, I AM MDC Day will highlight the contributions and success of illustrious alums. This year, the College will recognize renowned Hispanic radio and television personality Javier Romero at the Wolfson Campus celebration on Tuesday, Sept. 6, starting at 11:30 a.m. He is currently the host of El Desayuno, a top-rated radio morning show on AMOR 107.5 FM. Romero, who has more than 40 years of experience in radio, also co-hosted the legendary Sabado Gigante weekend variety show on Univision for 25 years. Last October, the Miami native became the first Cuban American to be inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. And like MDC’s President Madeline Pumariega, who is also an alumna, he is a graduate of Hialeah High School and a product of Miami-Dade Public Schools.

As part of the celebration, MDC’s National Landmark Freedom Tower will be illuminated blue on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Alumni, faculty, staff and students, as well as donors and donor organizations, community leaders and the general public, are encouraged to display their MDC pride by wearing blue on Sept. 6 and posting photos on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn with the official hashtags #IAMMDC and #savingdreams.

MDC started operating in 1960 amid desegregation and the influx of thousands of Cuban refugees. The first class only had 1,428 students, including seven Black students, making it the first integrated junior college in Florida. Today, MDC is one of the largest higher learning institutions in the United States and is a champion for diversity, resilience and educational excellence.

I AM MDC Day is organized by the Miami Dade College Foundation, which raises essential private funds for student scholarships and programs. Donations can be made at I AM MDC Day.

In addition to the main event on Sept. 6 at the Wolfson Campus, all other MDC campuses will host various activities for students and the community.
