Key commitments for Alabama and Miami, plus a problem for Georgia?

The latest on some key commitments for Alabama Football and Miami, as well as a potential recruiting problem for Georgia?

Last week, we talked about the importance of five-star safety Caleb Downs, at least in terms of the race for the No. 1 spot in the 2023 college football recruiting class.

While Ohio State and Notre Dame hold the top two spots now, Alabama football is coming and after landing the No. 12 overall prospect in the 2023 class, as well as the top-ranked safety, and No. 1 player in the state of Georgia, the Tide are on a roll.

Alabama football is now fifth in the 2023 team composite rankings from 247 sports and the teams ahead of them all have at least 18 commitments in the 2023 class. So there is a golden opportunity for Bama to keep moving up in the rankings.

And one reason the Tide are now able to make a run at the No. 1 overall ranking is the talent they are getting from the state of Georgia.

Downs is the second player ranked in the top seven for the state in 2023 to commit to Alabama instead of Georgia and a third in the top 11 is four-star QB Dylan Lonergan.

Lonergan pledged to Alabama football following Arch Manning’s commitment. You wondered if the Bulldogs would make a push for him but they haven’t yet.

But there’s no hiding the fact that six of the top seven recruits in the state and just two of the top 10 overall have committed to the Dawgs.

Georgia is obviously pretty good at getting talent from all over the country, but when there is an elite talent in your own backyard, you want to get it and that hasn’t happened for UGA in 2023.

Miami football with another big commitment

It’s been a great summer for Miami football on the recruiting trail and that trend continued on Wednesday with the commitment of elite linebacker Malik Bryant.

Bryant is 6-foot-2, 235 pounds, and is ranked 61st overall in the 2023 college football recruiting class, as well as the No. 4 linebacker according to the 247 sports composite rankings.

According to 247 sports, Bryant is also the highest-rated linebacker to commit to the Hurricanes in 15 years.

Not only is he a four-star prospect, but he’s also the eighth for Miami football recently and gives them a blue-chip ratio of better than 50 percent so far. Miami is also ranked eighth so far in the 2023 team rankings.

Mario Cristobal has done an impressive job on the trail and so far, he looks like a home run hire for the Hurricanes.
