Here are the top five stories in Miami today:

1. Miami has been selected one of the host cities for the 2026 men’s World Cup. FIFA announced the 16 host cities on Thursday at 5 p.m. The 2026 World Cup will be the largest in history with 80 games played overall. In May, Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation eliminating sales taxes on tickets for World Cup soccer matches.(Miami Patch, WPLG Local 10)

2. A Coral Springs police officer, Jason Scott Carter, has been charged by a South Florida federal grand jury with fraudulently applying to the U.S. Small Business Administration for a COVID-19 relief advance grant and low-interest loan. According the the indictment, Carter submitted a fraudulent Economic Injury Disaster Loan application and loan agreement on behalf of Jason S. Carter, Inc. (WSVN)

3. A spike in passenger traffic at Miami International Airport is putting pressure on the Aviation Department to handle parking needs over the weekends. The airport completed a new $7.2 million Parking and Revenue Control System in March that completed the installation of signage at the entry of the Dolphin and Flamingo garages that shows available spaces and signage on each garage level to guide customers to the available parking spaces. 4. The Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami (MOCA) announced two new site-specific installations coming to the MOCA plaza on July 29 and October 14. Autumn Casey’s “Cliff and April” and Chire “VantaBlack” Regans’ “To What Lengths” were selected following MOCA’s 2022 open call to artists for its “Art on the Plaza” series. (Miami’s Community News)

5. Roberto Carlos and Ronaldinho will host an all-star game in Miami today. The world champions with Brazil’s national team in Korea-Japan 2002, announced the list of stars that will participate in an exhibition match called “The Beautiful Game by R10 & RC3. (Marca)

  • JDS Development Group has obtained an $86 million construction loan to help it start work on a 64-story mixed-use tower in Miami’s Brickell district. The 1 Southside Park project is planned at 191 S.W. 12th Street. (Subscription: South Florida Business Journal)
  • The Stonewall Pride Parade and Street Festival is happening in Broward County today. Security is top of mind with threats of violence being made against the LGBTQ community. (WPLG Local 10)
