Miami football depth chart changes with spring practice and transfer additions
The Miami football program’s projected depth chart looks different after the conclusion of spring practice and transfer additions. Several players have surged during spring practice. Miami added four transfers since spring practice began on March 7. All of those players can be first team on the August depth chart.
Defensive ends Mitchell Agude and Akheem Mesidor, linebacker Caleb Johnson and offensive lineman Jonathan Dennis have all transfred to Miami since the start of spring practice. Agude, Mesidor and Johnson will all compete heavily to be starters for Miami in 2022. Miami has upgraded the roster with transfers.
Running back Henry Parrish who transfred from Mississippi in January was impressive throughout spring practice with returnees Don Chaney Jr. and Jaylan Knighton recovering from injuries. Parrish should enter training camp the favorite to be the first team RB. Johnson is the most likely transfer to start for Miami in 2022.
Agude and Mesidor project as the starting edge rushers but will compete with returnees Jahfari Harvey and Chantz Williams in August. Harvey had an excellent spring and will be a key part of the rotation either as a starter or second-team DE. The Miami football team needs more consistency from Harvey in 2022.
In two seasons at UCLA, Agude had 78 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, three pass breakups, one fumble recovers and six forced fumbles as an edge rushing LB. Mesidor had 70 tackles, 14.5 taackles for loss and 9.5 sacks in two seasons with West Virginia. Miami has added needed edge rushing depth and talent for 2022.
A former junior college transfer Johnson had 89 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 5.5 TFLs, two interceptions, one pass breakup and two fumble recoveries. Miami could potentially start five transfers on defense with four of those new to the Hurricanes in 2022. Tyrique Stevenson returns as a starting CB in 2022.
Stevenson transfered to Miami from Georgia in 2021. Darryl Porter Jr. who was a teammate of Mesidor at West Virginia is projected to start opposite Stevenson at CB. Porter was not enrolled at Miami in time for spring practice. Miami has improved its depth at CB during the offseason with 2022 signees and transfers.
Most of the other positions for Miami are track to remain the same as they were entering spring practice. The offensive line could be the most competitive positon for Miami entering August training camp. Offensive line coach Alex Mirabal shuffled players around during spring practice to create versatility.
