Matteo Berrettini undergoes surgery after Miami withdrawal

Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini underwent a right hand surgery, he announced on Tuesday. Berrettini, who is enjoying a career-high ranking of No. 6 in the world, went to Miami but at the last moment decided against playing at the tournament.

After withdrawing from the tournament, Berrettini consulted with medical experts, who advised him to undergo a minor procedure on his hand. Berrettini decided to listen to the doctors and on Tuesday announced the surgery went well.

“My team and I have been speaking to medical experts since my withdrawal from Miami with a right hand injury. Following multiple scans and assessments we decided a minor operation was the best solution to ensure a full and quick recovery.

Earlier today I had the operation and I’m happy to report it went extremely well. My doctor and team are already discussing plans for me to get back on-court. I will provide an update as soon as this plan is finalized. Thanks very much as always for all the support,” Berrettini announced in an Instagram post.

Berrettini struggled in recent weeks

Berrettini enjoyed a strong start to the year as he made the Australian Open semifinal, before losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal. Berrettini then went to South America, where he made the Rio de Janeiro quarterfinal before losing to Carlos Alcaraz.

After the clay courts of Rio de Janeiro, Berrettini went to Mexico, for an ATP 500 event in Acapulco. Berrettini didn’t enjoy a memorable campaign in Acapulco as he was forced to retire mid-match to Tommy Paul in the first round.

After doing some rehab on his hand, Berrettini went to Indian Wells for the opening Masters event of the season. In Indian Wells, Berrettini defeated Holger Rune and Lloyd Harris before suffering a surprise defeat to Miomir Kecmanovic. It remains to be seen when will Berrettini be ready to return to action.
