CORAL GABLES, Fla. — On a day that featured six all-time top-five performances, the throws duo of Corinne Jemison and Amanda Schaare carried the banner for the University of Michigan women’s track and field team on Saturday (March 26) at the Miami Hurricane Collegiate Invitational.

At 16.42m (53-10.75), Jemison came up just one centimeter shy of the U-M outdoor school record in the shot put that has been held since 2003 at 16.43m (53-11) by April Phillips. Jemison was joined north of 16 meters by Schaare, who topped out at 16.05m (52-8), becoming the first pair of Michigan teammates to both throw 16 meters in the same competition.

In what was arguably the best series of throws in outdoor school history, Jemison became the first woman in school history to eclipse 16 meters on three different throws in the same competition. In addition to her 16.42m best on her sixth-and-last throw, she opened with a 16.03m (52-7.25) heave and followed in the third round at 16.25m (53-3.75).

Both she and Schaare, who also got her best mark on her final attempt, have almost certainly clinched berths to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds in May as one of the top-48 performers in the NCAA East Region. That competition serves as the opening rounds of the national meet.

They both returned later in the afternoon for the discus and performed nearly as well. Jemison launched a 53.00m (173-10) heave on her final attempt to finish third overall, and Schaare threw a fourth-round 50.19m (164-8) to take fifth.

Both women were already likely or inside the projected bubble for NCAA East Prelims qualifying, but their performances in Coral Gables solidified their positions.

Jemison moved up one spot to No. 6 in school history, and Schaare is chasing the 51.35m mark that has her ranked No. 8 in school history from a year ago.

Also in their second outdoor competitions at Michigan, Aasia Laurencin and Riley Ammenhauser used runner-up finishes to move into the top five in program history in the 100-meter hurdles and triple jump, respectively.

Laurencin finished second overall and first among collegians with a 13.40 (+2.0m/s), good for the No. 5 spot on the all-conditions U-M top-10 list. She also likely secured a spot at the NCAA East Prelims with the effort, though she has the next two months to continue to improve on it.

The Wolverines were also impressive on the straightaway sans hurdles, as they put three in the top eight of the 100 meters competition. BreeAna Bates led the way with an 11.64 (+1.5m/s) runner-up finish, while Ziyah Holman and Hannah Waller were seventh and eighth in 11.92 (+0.6m/s) and 11.93 (+0.2m/s), respectively.

Ammenauser leapt 12.66m (41-6.5, +0.5m/s) to claim the program’s first-year record in the event outdoors from Tania Longe, who leapt 12.53m in 1995. The performance puts her in good position to advance to the NCAA East Prelims.

Holman also posted an all-time top-five performance as she finished second in the 200 meters in 23.47 (+0.2m/s), moving her to a tie for No. 5 in school history with Carly Knazze. The time puts her in a good position to advance to the NCAA East Prelims at that distance, though she has yet to open up in the 400-meter event in which she is a three-time Big Ten champion, NCAA Championships qualifier and U.S. Olympics Trial competitor.

In the pole vault, Mia Manson matched her outdoor personal best at 4.15m (13-7.5) to finish runner-up in the competition. At 3.90m (12-9.5) for fourth and fifth were a career-best-setting Cate Visscher and returning Big Ten Outdoor silver medalist Jessica Mercier, respectively.

The distance squad will make its 2022 outdoor debut next weekend at Stanford and will join the remainder of the team for its first full-team competition of the spring at Duke the following weekend.
