Baseball Falls In Game Two At Miami


MIAMI – Miami scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh and posted a 6-3 victory over No. 13 North Carolina at Mark Light Field on Saturday, handing the Diamond Heels their first series loss of the season. 
Carolina dropped to 18-5 overall and 5-3 in the ACC, while Miami improved to 16-6 and 6-2 in conference play.
 
Angel Zarate broke a 2-2 tied in sixth inning to put UNC on top with a base hit up the middle to score Vance Honeycutt, who had drawn a two-out walk. Reliever Kyle Mott then sat down the Hurricanes in order in the bottom of the frame.
 
The first five Hurricanes reached in the bottom of the seventh with four of them coming home to score. After Yohandy Morales tied the game with a single, Maxwell Romero knocked in two runs with double to put Miami ahead to stay.
 
Mott (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on five hits in two innings pitched. Alejandro Torres (2-0) was credited with the win as the Miami bullpen retired the final 10 Carolina batters in order.
 
NOTABLES
• Coupled with its loss here Friday night, Carolina has lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.
Johnny Castagnozzi hit his seventh home run of the season. He has homered in five of the last nine games, including the middle game of each of the first three ACC series.
• Honeycutt stole his ACC-leading 6th and 17th bases of the season, which is the most by a Tar Heel freshman since 2000 when Adam Greenberg stole 28 and Russ Adams swiped 20.
Tomas Frick singled in each of his first two at-bats for this 10th multi-hit game of the season. He has two or more hits in four of the last eight games.
Angel Zarate singled in the top of the fourth inning to extend his on-base streak to 46 games and his hitting streak to 23 games. Zarate earned his second hit of the game in the sixth to tie Frick for the team lead in multi-hit games (10).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Castagnozzi hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to open the scoring (UNC 2, UM 0).
• Edgardo Villegas and Yohandy Morales hit back-to-back run scoring doubles in the bottom of the first inning (UNC 2, UM 2).
• Zarate single up the middle with two outs to drive in Honeycutt, who stole second after being walked with two outs (UNC 3, Miami 2).
• Morales’ run scoring single followed by Maxwell Romero’s two-run double plus Jacob Burke’s RBI hit total four runs in the bottom of the seventh for the Hurricanes (UM 6, UNC 3).
• The final run of the game was scored by CJ Kayfus on a wild pitch (UM 7, UNC 3).

UP NEXT

The Diamond Heels and Hurricanes will play wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be televised by Bally Sports.
