Diamond Heels Drop Series Opener at Miami


MIAMI – Six Miami pitchers combined to strike out 17 North Carolina hitters and the Hurricanes took the series opener from the Diamond Heels, 8-5, at Mark Light Field on Friday.
 
With the loss, No. 13 UNC falls to 18-4 overall and 5-2 in ACC play, while Miami improved to 14-6 overall and 5-2 in the ACC.
 
UM starter Carson Palmquist (5-1) struck out nine Heels in 5.0 innings of work, yielding just one run on six hits. The bullpen gave up seven hits in the final four innings, striking out eight.
 
The Diamond Heels outhit the Hurricanes 13-11 but left 13 men on base.
 
Miami led 8-1 after seven innings.
 
Mikey Madej made a dent in the deficit with an RBI-single in the eighth inning before Alberto Osuna blasted a 397-foot three-run home run over the trees in left field with two outs in the ninth to set the final score.
 
UNC starter Brandon Schaeffer (2-1) was charged with the loss, pitching just 2.1 innings, and allowing three runs on six hits.
 
NOTABLES
• North Carolina lost game one of a weekend series for the first time this season.
Angel Zarate singled in his first at-bat to extend his on-base streak to 45 games and his hitting streak to 22 games.
• Madej tied his career-high with three hits. The last time Madej had three hits in a game was at High Point on Feb. 19, 2020.
Danny Serretti recorded his second three-hit game of the season. He had three hits in the series opener at Duke last Friday. His season-high for hits is four against Seton Hall on Opening Day.
Tomas Frick and Hunter Stokely collected two hits apiece. It was Frick’s ninth multi-hit game of the season and Stokely’s sixth.
Shawn Rapp made his NCAA-leading 16th appearance, striking out two and stranding a pair of inherited runners.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Dorian Gonzalez hit a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the second to get UM on the board (UM 1, UNC 0).
• Jacob Burke and Gonzalez each delivered an RBI-single in the third inning (UM 3, UNC 0).
• Madej reached on a fielder’s choice and Frick came in to score in the top of the fourth (UM 3, UNC 1).
• Yohandy Morales hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning (UM 6, UNC 1).
• Burke scored on a throwing error and Gonzalez came home on ground out in the seventh inning (UM 8, UNC 1).
• Madej singled down the left field line to plate Hunter Stokely in the eighth inning (UM 8, UNC 2).
• Osuna hit a three-run home run on the bottom of the ninth inning (UM 8, UNC 5).
