Nick Kyrgios, Thanasi Kokkinakis accept wildcard into Miami doubles event
Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis will also be playing doubles together at the Miami Masters as the tournament organizers have awarded them a wildcard. Kyrgios and Kokkinakis have no previous appearances as a team in Miami but they are set to highlight this year’s doubles player field at the second Masters event of the season.
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis will be opening their Miami campaign against an experienced doubles duo as they have been drawn to play Santiago Gonzalez and Andres Molteni. The two pairs have no previous meetings but Kyrgios and Kokkinakis enter the match as the slight favorite since the hard surface favors them more.
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis have proved they can win together
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis asked the Australian Open organizers because they wanted to have some fun together at Melbourne Park. Not only that Kyrgios and Kokkinakis had a great fun, they made it all the way and became Grand Slam champions together.
“I have won some big titles around the world, played some amazing matches. This one ranks one for me,” Kyrgios said. After the two won the Australian Open, Kokkinakis admitted not did he in his wildest dreams expect to win it all with his close friend in Melbourne.
“To be a Grand Slam champion with my boy, we have known each other since we were eight, nine years old, done some serious things together, have had some serious experiences, but this is incredible. We didn’t expect this at all,” Kokkinakis said.
When playing alongside Kokkinakis, Kyrgios gives his absolute best. “When it’s not about me, I tend to do a little better. With me, I might go out to the pub first or not fight as hard, but when I’m with Thanasi, he knows that when I’m on the doubles court, I’ll do everything I can,” Kyrgios said. It remains to be seen how far can Kyrgios and Kokkinakis go in Miami.
