Where Miami football stands as finalist for WVU transfer CB Darryl Porter Jr.
The Miami football program has been named as one of four finalists with Florida State, LSU, and Oregon for former West Virginia cornerback Darryl Porter Jr. After playing sporadically as a freshman in 2020, Porter had 46 tackles, one tackle for loss, an interception and five pass breakups in 2021.
Porter who attended American Heritage chose West Virginia over Boston College, Iowa State, Maryland, Miami, Penn State, Washington State and Vanderbilt. Porter was the 104th ranked CB in the Class of 2020. Miami should have an edge to sign Porter Jr. over Florida State, LSU and Oregon for a few reasons.
The Hurricanes are the only one of the four programs that Porter Jr. is currently considering who offered him a scholarship in high school. New Miami CB coach Jahmile Addae signed Porter Jr. when he was in the same position at West Virginia two years ago. Miami also should have the advantage as a hometown team.
Former West Virginia wide receiver Winston Wright Jr. is now with Florida State. Oregon hired former Georgia defensive coordinator Dan Lanning to replace Miami head coach Mario Cristobal. USC will see a major surge in recruiting with Lincoln Riley arriving in Los Angeles from Oklahoma. Porter has some excellent options.
If Miami signs Porter Jr. he would likely project as a starter opposite Tyrique Stevenson who transferred to Miami from Georgia last year. Porter Jr. led West Virginia CBs in snaps in 2021. After the extra year granted to all NCAA athletes after the 2020 season, Porter Jr. has three years of eligibility remaining.
Stevenson is returning to Miami for his fourth season in college this season. The likelihood is that Stevenson will enter the 2023 NFL Draft. Miami signed three CBs in the Class of 2022. Four-star Chris Graves and Khamauri Rogers project Miami to have an excellent tandem of CBs in the future.
