Looking at the career of Jarred Cosart

This week’s player from Miami Marlins history is Jarred Cosart, a right-hander who spent three seasons in the organization from 2014-16.

Looking at the Miami Marlins career of Jarred Cosart

Originally a 38th round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2008 MLB Draft out of Clear Creek High School (TX), Cosart would only spend two seasons in the Phillies organization before being traded to the Houston Astros in 2011.

Going on to make his major league debut with Houston in 2013, the right-hander would spend the first half of the 2014 season with the Astros, and would be traded to the Miami Marlins on July 31, 2014 as part of a multi-player deal. Included in this deal alongside Cosart were Enrique Hernandez and Austin Wates going to Miami, as well as Jake Marisnick, Colin Moran, Francis Martes, and a 2015 Competitive Balance Round A pick going to Houston.

Joining the Marlins major league rotation instantly, the-then 24-year-old would go-on to impress across the remainder of the 2014 season, posting a 2.39 ERA across 10 starts. Looking to carry over that success into 2015, Cosart would however spend time on the IL during that season, but would still make 14 appearances (13 starts) with Miami at the major league level where he posted a 4.52 ERA across 69.2 IP.

Spending a majority of the first half of the 2016 season in Triple-A (four starts in MLB), Cosart would be traded by the club to the San Diego Padres on July 29, 2016 as part of another multi-player deal that sent Andrew Cashner, Colin Rea, Tayron Guerrero, and cash to Miami. In return, San Diego received Cosart, Carter Capps, Luis Castillo, and Josh Naylor.

For his time with the Marlins overall from 2014-16, Cosart would make a combined 28 appearances (27 starts) that included a 6-10 record with a 3.82 ERA across 153.1 IP. Included in this span were also a few notable numbers such as a 71:98 BB:K, a 1.350 WHIP, and a 1.8 WAR.

Cosart would spend the remainder of 2016, as well as the 2017 season with the Padres, and last pitched with San Diego in 2017.
