No. 15 USC Women’s Tennis Downs No. 23 Miami During ITA Kickoff Weekend

The No. 15 ranked Women of Troy defeated No. 23 Miami today (Jan. 28) 4-3 in the first match of ITA Kickoff Weekend in Waco, Texas. 
 
With the win, USC locked in their spot in the ITA Kickoff title match set for tomorrow at 12 PM PT against No. 22 Baylor. 
 
In doubles, Miami came out swinging as Boch-Collins/Pfennig defeated USC’s pair of Morra/Willson 6-1 on court three. The Canes duo of Khodan/Tahan followed it up with a win over USC’s No. 26 ranked pair of Cayetano/Piper to claim the doubles point. 
 
With USC down 0-1 to Miami after doubles, Trojan Grace Piper picked up right where she left off last weekend, swiftly defeating her Canes opponent Diana Khodan 6-1, 6-4 on court five.
 
Miami’s Isabella Pfennig helped the Canes reclaim the lead after beating USC’s No. 39 Snow Han 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
 
USC didn’t let off the gas, as No. 1 Eryn Cayetano defeated Miami’s Eden Richardson 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 on court one to tie things up. Trojan Salma Ewing then put the Women of Troy ahead 3-2 after her 5-7, 7-5, 6-0 win over #104 Daevenia Achong (UM). 
 
On court four, Miami’s Audrey Boch-Collins tied it up, beating Sloane Morra 7-6(8-6), 6-4 on singles four. 
 
It was senior Danielle Willson that clinched the victory for the Women of Troy, defeating Miami’s Maya Tahan 7-6(7-5), 1-6, 7-6 (8-6) on court six. Willson, who fought off three match points, won on a 36-stroke match point to solidify the victory for USC.
