No. 1 Women’s Tennis claims five wins on day one at Miami Invitational


CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The No. 1 University of Texas Women’s Tennis team earned a total of five victories on Saturday during the opening day of competition at the Miami Invitational at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. During the three-day event, the Longhorns are competing in singles and doubles in an individual round-robin format against No. 8 NC State, Vanderbilt and host No. 24 Miami.

In morning doubles action against Miami, the sophomore duo of Charlotte Chavatipon and Malaika Rapolu earned a 7-6 (7-3) victory against the tandem of Maya Tahan and Diana Khodan. Chavatipon and Rapolu trailed 5-4 and faced a match point at deuce before rallying to force a tiebreaker. After dropping the opening point in the breaker, Chavatipon and Rapolu won six straight points to claim a 6-1 advantage before closing out the match with a 7-3 win.  

In afternoon singles play against NC State, sophomore Peyton Stearns earned an impressive 6-4, 6-3 victory over eighth-ranked Jaeda Daniel. No. 40 sophomore Kylie Collins rallied for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win against No. 25 Abigail Rencheli.

Both Chavatipon and Rapolu added three-set singles win to close the day with perfect 2-0 records. Chavatipon rallied for a 6-7 (8-6), 6-1, 6-4 victory against Priska Nugroho, while Rapolu posted a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win over Sophie Abrams.

The Longhorns will continue play on Sunday, Jan. 16 with singles action against Vanderbilt beginning at 7 a.m. Central (8 a.m. Eastern). Immediately following singles play, Texas will face NC State in doubles action.

Texas concludes play at the Miami Invitational on Monday, Jan. 17. The Longhorns will face Vanderbilt in doubles beginning at 7 a.m. Central (8 a.m. Eastern). UT will then compete in singles against Miami.
